Virginia Beach Police Foundation Receives $10,000 Grant

The Homes for Heroes Foundation awarded the Virginia Beach Police Foundation (VBPF) a $10,000 grant to help fund the VBPF Scholarship, non-job related illness and accident disability programs. The VBPF is a resource to the Virginia Beach Police Department to supplement the funding provided by the City of Virginia Beach. Homes for Heroes, Inc. and the Homes for Heroes Foundation are honored to support the Virginia Beach Police Foundation in their mission to support their local Police Department and its service members.

Why was the Virginia Beach Police Foundation established?

The Virginia Beach Police Foundation is a volunteer-run, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that works independently from the Virginia Beach Police Department and the City of Virginia Beach. They are not a law enforcement agency, instead they exist to support the dedicated men and women who serve and protect the Virginia Beach community.

City budgets can be tight, and that often means important programs, tools, or training get delayed or cut altogether. That’s where VBPF comes in. They raise funds to help make new ideas possible such as advanced training, innovative equipment, or educational opportunities. They also step in to support individual officers through scholarships or emergency financial assistance when illness, injury, or personal hardship happens.

What does the VBPF do to help heroes?

The Virginia Beach Police Foundation is proud to offer programs that provide real, meaningful support to the officers of the Virginia Beach Police Department. These programs are designed to invest in their local officers’ futures and to stand by them when life takes an unexpected turn.

VBPF Scholarship Program

The VBPF Scholarship Program helps VBPD employees pursue higher education and professional development. Whether they’re working toward a degree or gaining skills to grow within the department, the scholarship is meant to open doors for advancement and career growth.

Non-Job Related Illness and Disability Support

When a VBPD officer faces a serious illness or injury that isn’t work-related, and can’t return to duty, the Virginia Beach Police Foundation provides financial assistance. This comes in handy especially if they’ve run out of paid leave and are facing serious financial hardship. This program helps ease the burden during difficult times so VBPD officers can focus on recovery.

Jake Jacocks, VBPF President, shed some light on how the VBPF helps to support their local law enforcement department:

“We offer scholarships to any police department employee who is seeking to further their education.

We help department employees who may be in financial need for something that’s not job related. For example an injury or illness that does not occur on the job, but causes a VBPD employee to miss work, can cause them to use all of their personal leave or sick leave. One officer’s spouse was diagnosed with cancer. They had no family in the area and they had a 5-year old son, so the officer exhausted all his leave time to stay home and care for his wife and son. So, we stepped up and paid their mortgage for several months until he was able to return to work.

And, for the families of our fallen officers, we are in a position to help. It is something we focus on, setting money aside for the families of fallen officers. If it happens, we can be right there within a day or so with the check to help them with those unexpected and immediate expenses.”

These programs reflect the VBPF’s commitment to the people behind the badge by supporting their wellbeing, growth, and peace of mind for their local law enforcement service members and their families.
