Thanks to Homes for Heroes real estate specialist, Greg Stroud, in Tennessee who nominated AMVETS Tennessee Post 1776 to receive a $5,000 hero grant from the Homes for Heroes Foundation. The grant allowed AMVETS to provide financial assistance for Tennessee veterans and their families in dire need.
AMVETS Post 1776 Serves Tennessee Veterans
The mission of AMVETS Tennessee is to enhance and safe-guard the entitlements for all American Veterans who have served honorably. Through leadership, advocacy and services; AMVETS Tennessee helps to improve the quality of life for American Veterans and their families, within the communities they call home.
Post 1776 has a Veterans Help Committee. Upon hearing of a financial need, the Veteran Help Committee evaluates the case. Upon committee approval, AMVETS post 1776 pays utility bills, rent, car payments, groceries, gasoline and hotel rooms. They have even paid roundtrip airfare to fly a son and a grandson from Alaska to Tennessee to see their dying father, a Veteran in Nashville.
AMVETS Post 1776 conducts an annual food drive during the Christmas season and they deliver food to needy Veterans residing in the HUD/VASH towers in and around Nashville. In 2018, they delivered $65,000 of non-perishable food to 172 needy Veterans. They donated over 26 boxes of food to the Nashville Rescue Mission and 22 boxes to the Fisher House at Ft. Campbell. Fort Campbell houses Veteran families while Veterans receive medical care. Members often make time to visit Veterans residing at the TN State Veterans Home in Clarksville, TN and the Veterans home in Murfreesboro, TN.
