Military Real Estate Agent Mario Gonzalez Gives Back $4M+ to Heroes

For Mario Gonzalez, giving back to those who serve has been a defining part of his life long before his association with Homes for Heroes.

A retired Navy officer and pilot turned military real estate agent, Gonzalez founded Navy to Navy Homes after seeing firsthand the challenges military families faced with frequent relocations and the housing crisis of 2007–2008. Today, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based brokerage has helped heroes save millions through home sales while giving back more than $4 million to military members, veterans, first responders, law enforcement officers, firefighters, medical professionals and teachers.

“I know firsthand what it’s like to move on short notice and make major decisions around a military assignment,” Gonzalez said. “When I see military families facing those same challenges today, I want to make the process as manageable as possible. Being able to use my experience to help them and other community heroes is something that has always meant a great deal to me.”

From Military Relocations to a Real Estate Mission

Gonzalez enlisted in the Navy at 17 and ultimately rose to the rank of Officer before retiring after 24 years. His experience moving around the country gave him a firsthand understanding of the challenges that come with military relocation.

That perspective became especially important during the housing crisis. Military homeowners who received orders to relocate could find themselves owing more on their mortgages than their homes were worth, leaving them to choose between selling at a loss, becoming landlords or risking foreclosure.

At the time, Gonzalez was working with his father-in-law’s real estate company. As military families began dropping off the keys to homes before they moved on to their next assignment, his father-in-law encouraged him to start a property management business.

What began as a practical solution eventually grew into Navy to Navy Homes, a full-service real estate brokerage serving military families and the broader Jacksonville community.

As Gonzalez began helping military homeowners, he started returning a portion of his commission to them as a way of saying thank you.

“Putting the needs of military service members first has always guided our business,” Gonzalez said. “Navy to Navy was built by doing what’s right for the people we serve.”

“That commitment is what makes Gonzalez a natural fit for Homes for Heroes,” said Amit Kulkarni, interim CEO of Homes for Heroes.

“Mario has built his commitment to service into the way he does business, helping heroes make one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives while putting money back in their hands,” Kulkarni said.

That philosophy remains at the center of Navy to Navy Homes today.

Helping Military Families Buy, Sell and Relocate

Navy to Navy Homes now operates offices in Jacksonville and Pensacola, Fla., with approximately 40 agents. About 65% of its business comes from military customers, giving its agents extensive experience helping military families navigate VA loans, deployment schedules, military home buying and selling, and transactions where a service member cannot be physically present.

The company closes hundreds of transactions each year and is on pace for approximately $100 million in sales volume in 2026. Gonzalez remains active as an agent, personally helping clients buy and sell roughly one to two homes each month.

The company also embraced virtual home tours and remote transaction support well before the COVID-19 pandemic. These services have proved particularly valuable for service members who receive orders before they can visit a new duty station.

“Our military clients don’t always have the luxury of doing everything in person,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve always understood that. Our job is to make the process work around their service and their lives.”

Giving Back to Military Families and Other Heroes

For Gonzalez, Homes for Heroes is a natural extension of the service culture that has shaped both his military and real estate careers.

“Teachers, first responders, health care professionals, military members and veterans all make sacrifices for our communities,” he said. “Real estate is one of the biggest financial transactions most people will ever make. If we can help a hero keep more of that money, that’s meaningful.”

A Homes for Heroes affiliate since 2014, Navy to Navy Homes has consistently ranked among the program’s top two affiliates since 2017. Since its founding in 2002, Homes for Heroes has served more than 80,000 heroes and returned more than $166 million in savings through more than $21 billion in closed real estate transactions. Its network includes approximately 2,900 real estate and mortgage affiliates across all 50 states.

Continuing a Lifetime of Service

Gonzalez’s commitment to service extends beyond real estate. He has volunteered with organizations supporting veterans and military families and coached youth soccer on Naval Station Mayport, including children whose parents were deployed.

His real estate career now spans nearly three decades. Since 1998, Gonzalez has worked as an investor, homeowner, landlord, property manager, Realtor and real estate advisor. He is a past president of the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors and remains active in the industry.

But for Gonzalez, success is measured by more than the number of homes sold.

“If we can help a military family successfully relocate, help a teacher buy a home, help a first responder sell a home and put money back in their pocket, that’s what makes this worthwhile,” Gonzalez said. “We’re in the business of real estate, but our mission is still service.”
