The Homes for Heroes Foundation awarded U.S.VETS Barber’s Point with a $5,000 grant to provide direct, tangible support to veterans through their housing, workforce development and mental health and wellness programs. Homes for Heroes, Inc. and the Homes for Heroes Foundation are honored to support U.S.VETS Barber’s Point in their mission to assist homeless veterans through their signature program, Veterans in Progress.
What Does U.S.VETS Barber’s Point Do to Help Heroes?
U.S.VETS Barber’s Point delivers a full-suite support package, from crisis housing and mental health care, to career guidance and family services. It’s a dedicated community designed to assist veterans toward stability, empowerment, and long-term success.
Tamah-Lani Noh, Program Director for U.S.VETS Barber’s Point, had this to say about what they offer their veterans:
“We have an amazing program. Within a year, we support over 1,800 veterans and their family members. We focus on helping our homeless veterans be better and do better for themselves and others. We provide case management, an actual place for them to live, food, and many support services.”

Here are the core programs and services offered by U.S.VETS Barber’s Point:
- Safe & Stable Housing Continuum – Veterans can access emergency, transitional, long‑term, and permanent housing. A standout feature: Kamaʻokū, a village of 36 fully-furnished tiny homes, offers dignity and privacy to formerly unhoused veterans.
- Holistic Case & Wraparound Support – Every veteran receives a one-on-one personalized assessment to determine their needs, and goal setting to determine the best ways to leverage the services provided. The services include case management, women’s services, and aftercare support.
- Mental Health & Wellness Services – Counseling is available for both individuals and groups, including PTSD, substance-use treatment, and inner conflict. In addition, life‑skills groups (e.g., culinary training, meditation, art therapy, hiking, writing, and sobriety support) help veterans rebuild daily structure and community ties.
- Focused Workforce Development – Barber’s Point hosts the signature “Veterans in Progress” initiative through its Career Center. Veterans receive career counseling, job-search assistance, resume prep, mock interviews, and clothing for interviews.
- Family & Outreach Services – Through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, low‑income veterans and their families can access financial aid for rent, utilities, car repairs, rapid re-housing, and household supplies. Outreach teams also deliver clothing, meals, emergency shelter, and resources directly to veterans in need.
Homes for Heroes local real estate specialist, Michelle Acohido-Morales, nominated U.S.VETS Barber’s Point to receive the $5,000 Homes for Heroes Foundation grant.
Michelle was asked why nominating this organization was important.
She reflected on her initial visit to their facility:
“It all started when my son enrolled in the U.S. Navy, and I became a real estate agent with Homes for Heroes. I was looking for an organization that I could connect with to get involved and help make an impact.
Tatsu showed me around the facility, explained what U.S.VETS Barber’s Point does to help veterans move out of homelessness, transition them into jobs, and build a life.
It was very impactful, and I decided to find a way to help this organization and support the great things they are doing for our veterans.”

How will this Grant be Used to Support Veterans?
The Homes for Heroes Foundation is honored to support U.S.VETS Barber’s Point with its mission to help veterans who may be facing homelessness by awarding the organization with a $5,000 grant.
Watch the grant presentation video:
Tatsu Sasaki, Development Manager for U.S.VETS Barber’s Point, provided an overview of that how they plan to use the donated funds:
“At U.S.VETS, our mission is to end veteran homelessness. What we do is remove the barriers for veterans trying to find a home. 100% of these donated funds will stay here in Hawaii to help Hawaiian veterans.
We will use the funds to provide temporary financial assistance, case management work, and in particular, these funds will go toward our Housing First Program.”
Tasi Sua, Permanent Housing Coordinator, works within the Housing First Program and he provided more on what his team does to serve veterans:
“I train my team to work with chronically homeless veterans to help them access resources they’ll need. And, they coordinate when they enter into a program with our partners and make sure they are ready and available to assist veterans with housing, healthcare, income and benefits.
All of our veterans have experienced homelessness that accumulated over a year. So we want to be sure we have an intensive program that addresses the behaviors that conflict with lease agreements, program compliance, and also paying rent on time.
It’s very important for us that we work closely with our veterans to create SMART goals in the areas where they need assistance.”
