Homes for Heroes was an idea that quickly took root and soon became a nationally recognized home buying and selling program. Hike or bike! Fort Belvoir has a great selection of parks and trails to take with the whole family, including The Mount Vernon Trail. This trail is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail which is 17 miles of paved paths in Northern Virginia.
You can go bird watching in Huntley Meadows Park. Home to over 200 species of birds, the park contains forest, wetlands, and even a historic home. This park is the largest park operated by the Fairfax County Authority with over two square miles of wildlife.
Visit Pohick Bay Regional Park and go boating, swimming, camping, or enjoy a riverfront picnic on the Potomac River. Don’t forget this park is the home of Pirate’s Cove Waterpark which is a day full of fun for the whole family.
Date Nights
Just minutes north of Fort Belvoir is the beautiful town of Alexandria. Take a free trip on the infamous King Street Trolley. Stroll through the city as the sun sets, then visit the boutiques and galleries downtown while stopping in to sample the local foods. Walk down the cobblestone streets to historical Old Town Alexandria. There you’ll find the Gadsby’s Tavern, where the founding fathers used to dine. It’s now a historical museum with photographs and antique items. And end the night with a romantic water taxi on the Potomac River.
