I recall our first run in…the time when our paths first crossed. I was the adventurous type always looking to explore new things. I had a pretty damn good talent for losing myself. My own mother did not know how to find me. But you did. And you comforted me and my family till we found my way home. You may have got tired of the calls, but I always made it home, because you were there for me.
Years later, we crossed paths again. I was going down the wrong road in life. You could have easily thrown me in jail and not looked back. But you took the time to get to know me, understand me and my life. You encouraged me, identified my potential and showed me a better path in life. I discovered a whole new world, because you were there for me.
Now that I am older and a grown man, we don’t run into each other as much. Sure there is the occasional time you pull me over and remind me to slow down. Although that tends to piss me off, you remind me that we all have families that we want to get home to. I remind myself to slow down and appreciate the little things in life, because you are there for me.
Then there are the times where we might see each other at the stadium, the mall or the airport. Although no words are exchanged, we recognize each other with a smile and a nod of the head. I feel safe and confident to enjoy my liberties and freedom, because you are there for me.
As I see your struggles on television and watch others demean your profession, I am overwhelmed with emotions.
I feel helpless…I wish I could do as much for you as you have done for me.
I feel angry…I wish others knew how much you have positively impacted my life.
I feel determined…to further stand strong and support you when you need me the most. Just as you did for me.
You have been there for me in the most dire times throughout my entire life. Although there are no words that can fully express my appreciation for what you do for me, my family, my friends and my community, I will continue to thank you the best way I know how. I will stand behind you, support you, and serve you with every opportunity. I will continue to thank you for your service, sacrifice and for helping me become a better person. I am grateful to have you in my life and you are appreciated.
