“The Few. The Proud.” I’m willing to bet our readers recognize this motto as one of the slogans of the Marine Corps. However, it also seems aptly fitting when applied to Olympic athletes.
“Why bother drawing this comparison in the first place?,” you may wonder. Well, I only recently just learned that 21 of the American athletes and coaches currently competing/participating in the Olympic Games in London are also on active duty in the U.S. military.
Granted, many past Olympians have also had military careers. Perhaps the most notable of these is George S. Patton, who prior to his stint as a legendary U.S. general was a gifted pentathlete who finished fifth in the 1912 Olympics. But it is rare for a member of the U.S. Olympic team to be simultaneously serving as a member of the U.S. military.
Homes for Heroes would like to give a shout-out to these soldiers currently displaying their athletic prowess on the world stage. Hopefully MREs prove to be performance-enhancing!
